Between lingering wildfire smoke and random thunderstorms, today has been a good day to stay inside and watch TV. (I did actually do some responsible stuff this morning, but decided to slack off in the afternoon.) So I decided to watch the new Ghost in the Shell anime series, now airing on Amazon.
I have a long history with GITS; you can see some of it here on this blog, including this 2023 post, and this one from 2021.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is probably my favorite iteration of GITS. Of course, the original manga is great, as is the first movie. The most recent anime version, SAC_2045, was kind of disappointing.
This new version is pretty good, but I’m not sure I like it as much as the SAC series. Only the first two episodes are out, though, so maybe it’ll grow on me. It’s definitely getting a lot of press. Here are a few article links:
- ‘The Ghost in the Shell’ Director Wanted Humans in Charge – from the NYT.
- The Ghost in the Shell Episodes 1 & 2 Review – from IGN.
- Prime Video’s New 10-Episode Sci-Fi Hit Was Designed to Look Like a Lost ’90s Anime – from CBR.
I do appreciate that it has more of a “classic” anime feel to it, rather than the janky computer-generated look of the SAC_2045 series.
